The City of Woodstock has taken a significant step in adopting new technology by approving Wing's drone delivery service in partnership with Walmart. This makes Woodstock the first in the Atlanta metro area to secure such permits. The service will originate from Walmart's store on Highway 92, offering rapid delivery of household essentials and groceries.

This initiative matters to Woodstock residents as it showcases the city's commitment to innovation while focusing on community safety. This drone delivery service will provide a convenient option for accessing everyday items, potentially altering local shopping habits.

Wing, a subsidiary of Alphabet, presented the plan at a recent City Council meeting. The company emphasized its dedication to safety and transparency. The drones, weighing around 11 pounds, can carry up to 2.5 pounds of goods over a range of six miles. They operate at low altitudes, ensuring they do not interfere with commercial flight paths.

The service will be managed through the Wing app, allowing customers to ensure their delivery spot is clear before confirming an order. The setup at Walmart's Highway 92 location will include a Nest of charging pads, which will keep operations quiet and eco-friendly with battery-charged generators.

Woodstock's Mayor, Michael Caldwell, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, highlighting the city’s reputation for embracing innovative technologies. He stated, “Woodstock has built a reputation as a city that embraces innovation while keeping community safety at the forefront."

The City’s Building Department has approved necessary plans and permits. The drone delivery service will launch after Wing completes site preparations at the Walmart store (City of Woodstock news).
